Bale grazing

Collection of notes and observations

  • Outwintering stock.
  • Minimal bale movement, left where needed at harvest / delivery
  • continual movement of stock
  • Adds valuable nutrients to poor grazing
  • Trampling, seed, muck, urine provides significant boost to following years pasture
  • Rolled Out so more stock have access at any one time
  • Use species rich and get seeding benefits

More commonly used Bale feeders : limted access, calves hard time, dangerous for stockman, lots of mud poaching and compaction

Arguments

Waste : except it’s increasing carbon, species richness, diversity of pasture, better water retention

Use quality species rich hay

Makes quality species rich hay

Hay too expensive.. so is fertilizer and bale grazing is cheaper
